Work Based Learning

27th September - Lesson One

Today was first lesson on Work Based Learning. Within Work Based Learning there 4 learning outcomes that we will be assessed on during this module, and they are :-
  1. Negotiate and undertake work based tasks
  2. Critically the work undertaken
  3. Integrate theory and practice
  4. reflect and make recommendations to improve practice
Within the brief it also says that this assignment provides an opportunity for the student to learn through work in a working environment. A real experience of working practices, meeting and dealing with clients, seeing commercial work in production and witnessing the challenges faced by practitioners. Learning taking place through this unit, building upon the Personal Management assignment in the first year and linking undergraduate level learning to the workplace. It provides the opportunity for students to recognise their own personal development in their work place setting and to acquire and develop those skills necessary for exemplary practice. Students will make the link between the modules studies throughout the programme and their work practice and action plan for future personal  growth and development. Students will be given the opportunity to undertake a specific work related tasks and will reflect on their own performance throughout the task with a view to achieving a constructive and beneficial learning experince.

Next within this lesson we were told all the different work placements that were being given to us and what they entailed and where they were.
Next week we will find out which work placement  we will have for Work Based Learning.

4th October - Lesson Two

In todays lesson for work based learning, we took a trip to one of the placements that will be on offer called "Workhouse - Creative Marketing ". On their website it gives a brief outline of what they do as a company and how they do it, this is what it says -

"At Workhouse we are driven by a passion for creativity. As a team of professionals, we work to combine marketing strategy and creative concepts, providing solutions that deliver tangible results time and time again. We pride ourselves on a straightforward approach that keeps our clients informed at every step of the way – this is why we create long-standing relationships with clients. Over the past 20 years, Workhouse has built a reputation as an approachable and creative full service agency. By combining technical knowledge, extensive commercial experience, and imaginative design across many commercial and industry sectors, we provide effective marketing solutions for our clients. Businesses today need creativity to distinguish themselves from the competition – as a full service marketing agency, we can deliver strategies and campaigns that will give them that edge.  Whatever the challenge, we will shape our solution accordingly, and continually meet, enhance, and exceed our client’s marketing objectives keeping clients informed at every stage of their projects."

We went on this trip to look around the place to get an idea of how they work, what their studio and facilities were like and how they run the business.
While we were there we looked around the studio they have and also round the offices, we also got to have a question and answer time with one of the managers and also their photographer.
Here is a couple of screen shot of their home page on their website and a link to that website.

I found this trip helpful to me because i have never seen a business like that up front before, so it was good to see that people are actually making a business for themselves in this certain area, but at the same finding work with it too.I also found it helpful it see because i got to see different facilities and a little bit of how they place was run.
Another reason as to why this trip was helpful is because now i know what a work base placement will look like and entail, so it has now prepared me a little bit to what i will have to do at my placement.

11th October - Lesson Three

For our Work Based Learning lesson today we had a pass student called Cassandra Mayers come in to talk to us about her life now as a working photographer within the industry.
Within this talk she spoke to us about what work she doing now and how she goes about getting work, she also spoke to us about where she has done things wrong, and that she would change if she could do things differently, and she also showed us the work she is producing now.
Here are some of the images that she showed us and also the link to her website:-

I found this talk helpful for me to listen too because it was first hand advise from a young person that has come from the same university as me and is actually doing and getting the work that she loves doing. This was also helpful because she didn't sugar coat it for us, she just told us the truth about it all, so we we kind of have an idea of what the industry maybe like for when we are ready to start working professionally.

25th October - Lesson Four

In todays lesson of "Work Based Learning" we spoke one on one with Richard to discuss where we would be doing our own work placement.
My work placement is at a place called "Panaz". Here below is screen shot of their website home page and also a link to their website:-
Richard has got in touch with Sarah Lloyd from Panaz and she has teamed up a guy called Jake Smith to create a project for me to do.
Jake Smith has designed a new website for Panaz and they want some black and white photography thatis seductive and 'artisan', showing the craft workers and production process and old factory features.

This is intended to reinforce the 'craft' aspect of the company and move the customer away from soulless production techniques.

Shallow depth of field black and white shots of factory details, employees at work, close ups of hands handling fabric, light streaming through windows etc.

Next my next step will be to make a 20/20 presentation of my work to show Sarah and Jake, and then i will email Sarah to see when i can go over to discuss things and put things into action.

16th November - Panaz

Today Me and Liv went into Panaz to have a first meeting with Sarah Lloyd. This meeting was just a chance for me and Liv to have a look around Panza, to see what it was all about, the layout of the building and factory and what was expected of me and Liv and what type of images they want for their website.
We were shown around and by doing so, we were able to discuss and think of what type of images Panza want.
The kind of images we discussed were, Black and White images, with shallow depths of field, hands on images and also within the images they want to show a kind of narrative about the workplace of Panza and what they are all about.
Within our next meeting with Sarah Lloyd and Jake Smith, we have the chance to present our presentation and the ideas and research that me and Liv have come up with.

20th November - Panaz Presentation

In mine and Liv's first meeting at Panaz with Sarah Lloyd, we were asked to make a presentation of photographs to show the ideas we had to show the narrative of the Panaz workplace.
The ideas that we had for the images, were black and white images with some showing shallow depth of field. Also we had the idea of the images showing a hands on approach from the workers working there.
So for these images, we found some that shows these ideas from the internet, but also took our own images. For our own images, we took a trip up to a material place called Oakmount Mill in Burnley, and photographed the products they had there.

7th - 2nd Meeting at Panaz

Today was our second meeting with Sarah Lloyd, only this time we were meeting at JP74 and also meeting with Jake Smith.
This meeting was to show our powerpoint presentation, to see if all our thoughts and ideas of what images they wanted were all on the same line and also to discuss when me and Liv would be going into Panaz to shoot our images.
So within the meeting we decided that we would produce both black and white images, but would stick to the theme of the "hands on approach". Although we didn't settle on a certain amount of final images that we would produce, we decided to just produce a body of work and then Sarah and Jake would decide how many images they would use.
And lastly the dates we settled on to go back into Panaz and actually take the images, would be the week starting 17th through to the 20th of December.
Then our last meeting would be on the 4th January and 9:30, this meeting would be to show our final images and discuss how the whole job went.
